About the Project » Objectives

Overall Objective:

Capacity Building and Research in the area of Smart Grid Technology to enhance the efficiency and reliability of current electrical power networks within the Caribbean Region.


Specific Objectives:

  • Setup of Smart Grid Research Laboratory at UWI, St. Augustine Campus, which will be equipped with state of art modelling tools, test & measurement equipment, high power computing facility, power system analysis tools and smart hardware.
  • Research on smart subsystems i.e. energy, information and communication subsystems of the smart grid and their integration challenges. Results publications in the form of research papers, research articles, conference papers.
  •  Capacity building in smart infrastructure systems for power grids by means of blended learning, a workshop and a training program with the aim of  trained group of researchers, field professionals and technicians for implementation of Smart Grid Technology in the Caribbean region and trained teachers and higher education institute managers in content developing and blended learning & training.
  • Create awareness on smart grid technology through Public Lecture and print/electronic media.
  • Establish a network of policy makers, field professionals, researchers, teachers and industries related to this technology by the means of individual/group meetings, workshop and training program.
  • Prepare Green Paper via public survey/feedback for the local government to implement Smart Grid Technology within the country.
  •  Provide recommendation to improve efficiency and reliability of the existing electrical power networks.
